Education

I am a 53 year old certified special education teacher from the state of Louisiana. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Education (Major Special Education) and a Master’s of Science in Education (Educational Leadership). In this capacity, I have experience in all core subject areas. However, my preferred subjects for specialization purposes are Mathematics and English Language Arts. In my 10 plus years of serving as an educator, I have worked within a Middle School for 4 years within the Special Education Department as an Inclusion Teacher within the East Baton Rouge Parish School System (EBRPSS). Currently I have been assigned as a 7th grade Inclusion teacher. I have also served as an Elementary Special Education teacher for 8 years. Before becoming a certified educator, I was a paraprofessional for 7 years within the EBRPSS. I have also been employed in Iberville Parish, Jetson Correctional and Gables Academy. These numerous opportunities have allowed me to work within a wide range of learning levels, learning styles and personalities. My philosophy is based on the idea that learning happens in an environment of mutual respect in which the student is encouraged to think and make new connections for themselves. My experience has been that one-to one personal tutoring provides an environment that fosters mutual respect whereas the student is encouraged to think and make connections for themselves in a comfortable and safe environment. This further allows students to develop the ability to resolve personal barriers to learning that my hinder them from achieving academic goals that are designed to lay the foundation for a deep and lasting understanding of subject matter.

Experience

Working as a Special Education teacher affords me the advantage of working with students with disabilities one on one and small groups. Working with students within this capacity has allowed me to develop and fine tune my approach to tutoring and also to further develop my personal philosophy as an educator. My aim as a tutor is to help my students to develop a better understanding and the confidence that they need to locate answers and develop the ability to tackle new and unfamiliar information and also to be able to discern new and unfamiliar information. My approach to educating students varies depending on the student’s needs and learning style. The philosophy that I have implemented within my teaching style is based on encouraging students to think for themselves, using real-world examples wherever possible. I build upon the background knowledge of students and move gradually towards more complex areas as their confidence improves with knowing that they are able to achieve academically. I utilize checking for understanding techniques and teacher made assessments prior to moving on to the next skill. When working with students I move from memorization to comprehending so that the skills learned may be used as they move along their academic journeys.
